College of Shari'a and Islamic studies

The Faculty of Shari’a and Islamic Studies was established in 1402 A.H./1981 A.D. for offering students formal education in Islamic and Shari’a studies. The academic program started in 1982/83. The faculty has nearly 1200 students, and 75 staff members. The academic quality is ensured through a continuous process of evaluation. The faculty has an active research program, with 85 sponsored projects, and training and consultative services are provided to government and private sectors. The credit-hour system is followed, and Arabic is the medium of instruction. A student must complete 132 credit hours to obtain a university degree.

The Faculty’s programs have theoretical and practical components, with the latter involving sermons, prophetic tradition, memorization and recitation of the Koran. The Faculty offers two major programs -- Principles of Religion and Islamic Shari’a, of which the former is provided by the Departments of Doctrine & Preaching Islam, and Koranic Interpretation & Prophetic Tradition, while the latter is provided by the Departments of Jurisprudence & Principles of Jurisprudence, and Comparative Jurisprudence & Shari’a Policy.

The Faculty has been offering Postgraduate program since 1995 in Koranic Interpretation, Prophetic Traditions, Principles of Jurisprudence and Comparative Jurisprudence. A total of 88 students are pursuing these programs, 35 of whom have been awarded the Master’s degree. The Faculty encourages students involvement in seminars, contests, trips and research.
