WEB SITE PAGE LAYOUT

This section states the recommendations for best-practices, mandatory, and optional materials, to be included within the page layout of any web site belonging to the kuniv.edu domain. These recommendations were concluded based on different sources:

  1. KUCIS organized workshop: Audience (with technical expertise related to web development and responsible for different web site within the kuniv.edu) from different parts of the university bodies come up with different recommendations for web page layout.
  2. International research onto how information should be positioned in a typical web site.
  3. High reputation universities, web site common practices.

    1. Keep navigation consistent throughout the site.
    2. Users should always be able to return easily to your homepage and to other major navigation points in the site, including the main KU web site.
    3. A simple path description should be included that tells you exactly where you are.

    1. Links to internal pages within the web site should be on the middle left side of the browser

Kuwait University Logo
    1. KU logo (college or department specific, if applicable) should be in every homepage and subsequent pages of their web sites.
    2. KU logo should be placed in the top left corner or very close to.
    3. Don't alter or manipulate the university logo in any way. Inappropriate use of the logo will dilute its effectiveness.

Link "back home"
    1. All official university web site's pages are required to include a link back to KU homepage.
    2. The link should be easy for users to find and in font size that is clearly visible

Quick Links
    1. Quick link menu should be used whenever possible.
    2. List should be dynamically created whenever possible to contain the most widely visited links within the site.
    3. It should be located in a very visible place within the site such as the top left corner, or top right corner.
    4. If static list is used, then they can be placed at the top.

KU home ink
    1. Web administrator has to have a link back to KU home.
    2. It is recommended to have a simple clear text "KU home".
    3. Location would be close to back-home link "mentioned previously".
    4. The other option would be a small version of KU logo and clear text indicating KU homepage like "visit KU web site" or "KU home".
    5. The recommended minimum width for logo at the footer is 80 pixel

Language switch
    1. Kuwait University's web sites should be bilingual (English/Arabic). A switch between both languages should be included in a clear and visible place.

Copyright/ Legal/ Access/
Ethics/ Privacy issues
    1. Copyright, legal, ethical, access, and privacy policies should be stated in each and every page.
    2. These links should be places at the bottom of the page

    1. Spotlights section is encourages at the first page of the web site to describe part of the activities, events, system of such unit. Spotlights are marketing tools.

Web Graphics

Images can delay the downloading of a web page. If an image or graphic takes too long to download, users may become frustrated and leave the site. Please ensure that all images for use on the web are 72 ppi.

  1. KU Logo

Please use the official renditions of the KU logo, available at repository
http://www.kuniv.edu/KUWEB/repository/, and do not distort or manipulate the logo in any way.

  1. Other Graphics:

The university prepared some graphics to be used directly in different web sites. It is up to flavor of the web administrator and designer to choose their preferences or use some of these images to design their own mixture. It is strongly recommended that when designing a new image the 72ppi is respected. The Unification project's repository can be found at http://www.kuniv.edu/KUWEB/respository/.

    • Ensure that all images include an "ALT" tag and height and width information
