The College of Pharmacy is relatively recent in its origin, having been established in February 1996. It is a constituent element of the four-faculty Health Sciences Centre of Kuwait University, and located within the premises of Faculty of Medicine temporarily, with facilities earmarked for teaching and research, staff and administrative offices, and laboratories. The Faculty enrolled its first batch of 32 students in the academic year 1997/98, and the following years saw a steady increase in student intake to reach the present strength of 200 students. The faculty has already turned out two successful batches of graduate pharmacists, with the first qualifying batch getting their degrees in the year 2002, at the successful completion of the intense five-year Pharmacy program.

The Pharmacy program is offered at the undergraduate level, and has been specifically designed to train students to become competent professionals, and be active members of the health care team. The integrated curriculum follows the North American model of Pharmacy practice, and emphasizes the relationship between pharmaceutical sciences and Pharmacy practice. The program enables students to develop problem-solving skills, while teaching them to be competent, caring health professionals, committed to life-long learning, so that they acquire requisite professional skills and competency to provide the citizens of the State of Kuwait with exemplary pharmaceutical services and care.

The Faculty’s goal is to provide the best education facilities to the students, duly backed with state-of-the-art resources and facilities, to develop in students the leadership capability and a keen sense of responsibility. They are also encouraged to form study groups to facilitate the learning process. The Faculty has an active Student Advisor Program, and the students play a key role in the ongoing review of the effectiveness of their undergraduate Pharmacy program. The Faculty aims at ensuring a smooth transition between the undergraduate program and Pharmacy practice in Kuwait.

Instructions in basic and pharmaceutical sciences are provided through didactic lectures, small group learning experiences, tutorials, seminars, supervised research projects, visits and laboratories. Instruction in Pharmacy practice is similarly provided with the addition of structured learning experience, and internship at selected practice sites, such as hospitals, clinics, community pharmacies, pharmaceutical manufacturing and supply facilities, drug regulation and quality control laboratories for the students mandatory professional exposure under the guidance of expert practitioners. The Faculty’s medium of instruction is English, and a total of 160 Credit hours are required for the students to graduate.

The courses involve studies in basic, medical and pharmaceutical sciences. The Faculty has four departments -- Pharmacy Practice, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Applied Therapeutics and Pharmaceutics, and its resources include well-equipped laboratories, with facilities for research. Alongside academics, the Faculty encourages students to participate in sporting, social and related activities. Presently, the Faculty’s new premises are ready for occupation, with ample provision for modern laboratories, lecture halls, research and experimental facilities, to provide the students with the best learning environment, amidst congenial surroundings, so as to prepare competent, capable and professional Pharmacy cadres for the country’s needs.
